Among Persian rugs, silk Heriz rugs are a breed apart, highly sought by collectors. In contrast to the popular Heriz rugs made of wool and geometric patterns, silk Heriz rugs are very rare and date back to an earlier time. They were produced for the elite, and their fine weave allowed curvilinear and naturalistic designs.

The present piece is unique on many levels, with no other comparable rug that we know of. It was clearly custom-made by a master weaver, designed like a play in a theater. The "curtains" open against a midnight-blue sky within a stunning niche with charming flowers and animals on each side of the pinnacle and a gorgeous border of rust-color cloudbands. The scene itself is populated by shimmering gold-platinum vegetation, highlighted by a masterful and bold coloring of pomegranates and flowers. It is brought to life by two lions chasing a wild cat up a tree, while a mythological bird scurries away and two impassive gargoyles look upon from each side of the border. A wonderful composition, combining the arts of storytelling, Persian poetry, and painting.
